Narcissus: A Tale of Myth and Legend
The origins of Narcissus are shrouded in mystery with claims it originated in Italy and North Africa and that it was brought east from the Persian empire in the 8th century. The flower is linked to the Greek myth of the Boeotian youth who fell in love with his own reflection. The flower that sprang up from where he lay has its origins in the Greek word ‘narke’ meaning ‘numb’, a reference to the narcotic effects of Narcissus.
Genus: Narcissus
Common Names: Narcissus Tazettas, Nargis
Its Natural Habitat
This wild flower prefers damp meadows and the banks of steams and rivers, growing 20-60 cm tall in dense clusters. Each stem supports 4-12 blossoms. Narcissus Tazetta naturally propagates through bulb offsets, growing wild on the mountain sides of the Himalayan foothills in KPK province.
A Wild Bloom
As with many Mediterranean plants found in Pakistan, local legend says Narcissus was brought here by Alexander the Great when he entered what is today northern Pakistan in 325 BC, conquering Punjab and Sindh before returning to Babylon.
Not formally cultivated, this wildflower flourishes on mountain slopes and water banks. Stems are carefully harvested in bunches of 80–100, preserving the plant for future regrowth.
Fragrance of Mystery
Our Narcissus Tazetta Absolute captures the flower’s heady, sweet floral aroma, with traces of green hyacinth and muguet, indole, hay and honey. The Absolute is herbaceous, waxy and animalic with a romantic but mysterious melancholy reflecting the tragic mythical origins.
Scent notes: Sweet green floral with hints of hyacinth, jasmine, and animalic undertones
Pairings: Jasmine, Hyacinth, Sandalwood
